Early Playing Days at Burnley
Mike Phelan began his football journey at Burnley, signing as a schoolboy in 1979. He turned professional in 1980, making his league debut in 1981 and playing a key role in Burnley’s 1982 Third Division title win.

In 1985, Phelan joined Norwich City for £60,000. As captain, he led the team to a fourth-place finish in the First Division and an FA Cup semi-final in 1989, cementing his legacy as a key figure at Carrow Road.

Phelan moved to Manchester United in 1989, winning the FA Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup, League Cup, and Premier League. Known for his versatility, he played across midfield and defense, earning his only England cap in 1989.
Success and Leadership at Norwich City
Transition to Coaching and Management
After retiring at West Bromwich Albion in 1995, Phelan transitioned to coaching. He worked as Gary Megson’s assistant at Norwich, Blackpool, and Stockport County before returning to Manchester United in 1999.
Coaching Success at Manchester United
Promoted to assistant manager in 2008, Phelan became a key figure under Sir Alex Ferguson. During this period, United secured three Premier League titles, two League Cups, and made two UEFA Champions League final appearances.
Following Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Phelan briefly coached at Norwich City and managed Hull City, earning Premier League Manager of the Month in 2016.
Return to Manchester United
In 2018, Phelan rejoined Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, becoming assistant manager once again. He remained part of the coaching team until 2021, stepping back under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
